Patrick finished his slice of apple and stared down at the juice on his fingers, flexing them. Briana waited. When it became clear she wasn’t going to be dissuaded, Patrick sighed.

“Selkies,” he said, as if the word was supposed to mean something to her. “Seal wives and seal husbands. They come ashore to bathe in the moonlight or dance in the surf or whatever and shed their seal skins. The stories say if you steal and hide a selkie’s skin, the selkie will have to marry you.”

A terrible certainty rose within Briana, clawing its way up from her gut until she felt sick with it.
